Fog Collection Devices: Collar Collector

Africa, Cape Verde
30 minutes
Classroom Project

Materials & Procedures

  1. Thick cellophane
  2. Tape
  3. Coffee can
  4. Tree sapling: Conifer trees work best for this

  1. Find a small conifer tree or sapling on your school grounds.
  2. Using the plastic, create a collar around the lower part of the sapling with the smallest part of the collar at the bottom of the tree. The trunk of the sapling will be a little off-center so that the bottom of the cone can empty into the coffee can.
  3. Place a coffee can so that any water that runs down the collar will collect into the can. Water that collects on the needles of the tree during episodes of fog, dew, or showers, will drop off into the collar and fill the can.
