Wages from intern stipend, $9,000 plus book and instructional materials allowance of up to $1000 per academic year, plus 6 credit hours tuition remission per semester. In addition, Fellows will have the opportunity to take advantage of the following academic and professional benefits:

  • Establish connections with community leaders and organizations
  • Gain strong knowledge and skills about local community building
  • Learn advanced best practice models and applications
  • Earn certification in community economic development and fund raising
  • Access professional development programs (i.e. trainings, academic conferences, luncheons).



The MPA degree is offered as a general degree, and with the following emphasis areas: urban administration, nonprofit management, and health administration. The UMKC Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program is a two-year program. Fellows will work in community development organizations, nonprofits, local government, and economic development agencies while enrolled as a full-time student. During the fall and spring semesters, Fellows will work 20 hours per week, and during the summer 30 hours per week. Students complete a 36-hour program with courses in leadership, politics, budgeting and research. Emphasis areas include practitioner forums in fundraising, board management and community economic development. Urban Administration spotlights housing, community development, public health and urban redevelopment.

Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program Application Requirements:


  • Applicants must demonstrate a record of academic achievement, community involvement, and professional excellence
  • Completed Peace Corps Description of Service (DOS)
  • Personal statement and an essay regarding your involvement and interests in community development (see application, below).
  • Three letters of reference (see application, below).
  • Completed application form, see Department of Public Affairs
