Description

The UWM Peace Corps Fellows Program is a two-year program that combines graduate study with a work placement in a local community-based economic development organization. Graduate study can be pursued in the following: Non-Profit Management, Urban studies, Economics, Geography, History, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, English. The work placement totals 20 hours per week during the academic year and 30 hours per week during the summer. One of the core objectives of the UWM Center for Economic Development is to promote neighborhood economic revitalization. The Peace Corps Fellows Program at UWM is an integral part of the Center's capacity-building activities. Fellows function as "urban developers" within their respective organizations. As they work through their graduate programs at UWM, Fellows bring much needed expertise in a variety of fields to Milwaukee community based organizations. Milwaukee has a large Hispanic population and several participating community organizations offer work placements for Spanish-speaking Fellows.

Requirements

Individual UWM graduate programs will evaluate applications to determine whether prospective Fellows meet departmental admissions standards. Applicants accepted by UWM graduate programs will then be evaluated by a Fellows Program selection committee. Each Fellow will be required to take a three-credit course in urban economic development as a part of his/her elective credits.
