Information Technology

What do information technology Volunteers do?

Due to a lack of resources and education, many of the world's developing countries have been unable to take advantage of the advances in technology. Today, however, Peace Corps Volunteers are working to help people in these communities take part in the information technology (IT) revolution. Information technology uses computers and computer software to save, protect, find, and transmit information.

IT Volunteers help communities and organizations use available and appropriate information technology, helping to bridge the divide between those who can afford access to technology and those who cannot. They identify innovative approaches that allow resource-poor communities to use information and communications technology for their own development purposes. Typical IT jobs include teaching computer classes, helping set up and run computer centers, and providing businesses insight and access to information.

How can you get ready?

If you are interested in computers and technology this could be a possible work sector for you. You can start getting ready now by taking computers classes and seeking out information and skills on your own.

IT Volunteers typically have backgrounds and degrees in computer science or information systems, or knowledge of or experience in basic computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; and strong leadership and organizational skills.
