What is the Third Goal?
Third Goal
The Third Goal of the Peace Corps aims to help Americans understand the people and cultures of other countries. It is one of the three goals that support the mission of the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship.
Why is it important?
When Volunteers and friends of the Peace Corps support and engage in Third Goal activities, they help Americans gain a greater understanding of the world. They foster the spirit of world peace and friendship. They may also inspire Americans to be civic minded by example.
How do I get involved?
Whether you are a returned Volunteer, a currently serving Volunteer, a family member, or a friend of the Peace Corps, you can engage in Third Goal activities. For example, if you are an RPCV, you can give classroom, workplace, and community talks about your Volunteer work. If you are a family member, you may want to share something you have learned of the culture where your Volunteer is serving. You may want to write to your local newspaper or give an interview on a local radio program. Perhaps you would like to team up with others to organize a cultural event. Here are some ideas and suggestions on how to get involved any time during the year.
If you are affiliated with a school or organization, consider inviting a returned Volunteer to speak through the Speakers Match program or any of the Speaker's Bureaus of affiliated Peace Corps groups. You could also connect with any one of the Peace Corps regional offices for details about events you can get involved with or attend.
Peace Corps Week
Peace Corps Week 2012 is from February 26 to March 3
Peace Corps Week celebrates the anniversary of the Peace Corps. Traditionally, returned Volunteers and friends of the Peace Corps participate in Third Goal activities in honor of the past and present work of the agency and its Volunteers. Additionally, through concerted efforts by returned Volunteers and Peace Corps regional offices, elected leaders acknowledge Peace Corps Week through proclamations.
