Duties

This position functions as a generalist Public Health Nurse I/II (PHN I/II) for the Fairbanks Public Health Center and provides services to the Fairbanks communities and surrounding Interior region in Alaska.

This work includes Maternal and Child Health Services, Immunizations, TB prevention and Control, as well as Infectious Disease Prevention and Disease Control, Health Promotion and Health Education, Community Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Public Health Preparedness and Response.

Communities served for the Interior Region in the Fairbanks North Star Borough are Fairbanks, Ester, North Pole, Salcha, Fox, College, Eielson, Fort Wainwright, and Two Rivers.

The primary purpose of this PHN I/II position is to provide individual, population and systems based public health nursing services. These services include disease prevention and health promotion and protection for all members of the population, particularly vulnerable populations, utilizing nursing and public health best practices.

This Public Health Nurse I/II is one of over 180 committed staff for the Section of Public Health Nursing (SOPHN) in the State of Alaska.

We are looking for the following demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Specialized clinical knowledge of nursing skills and practice.
  • Sound knowledge of public health philosophy, principles, and practices as related to public health with a special focus on population-based individual, community, and system care.
  • High degree of interpersonal relationship/collaboration skills.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, presentation skills, and skills in adult learning concepts.
  • Strong organizational skills, such as the ability to prioritize and organize workload, time, materials, and resources.
  • Strong computer skills, ability to use computer for email, word processing, internet searches, producing, and carrying out web-based, long-distance learning.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Flexible and able to quickly adapt to change.
  • Self-motivated, works independently, completes projects, and works within the team environment.
  • Knows when to seek consultation and support, and does so as needed.
  • Able to maintain a strong working knowledge of Public Health Nursing and Nursing Administration Scope & Standards of Practice.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to both our section of Public Health Nursing (SOPHN) employees and the communities we serve.
  • Goes the extra mile to get the job done.

Qualifications

Public Health Nurse I:

  • B.A./B.S. in Nursing from an accredited college or university OR Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

AND

  • A license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska, or eligible to receive a license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska.

Public Health Nurse II:

  • B.A./B.S. in Nursing from an accredited college or university OR Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

AND

  • A license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska, or eligible to receive a license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska.

AND

  • One year's professional public health nursing experience in a public health organization (tribal, county, city, or state); OR One year of experience as a Public Health Nurse I for the State of Alaska.

Substitution:

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing or Public Health from an accredited college or university, in addition to the basic educational requirement (Bachelor’s degree in Nursing OR Direct-Entry Master of Science in Nursing), may be substituted for a maximum of one year of public health nursing experience.

Special Note:

Experience in international health, occupational health nursing, or school health nursing may be substituted for a maximum of six months of required public health nursing experience. Credit will be pro-rated on the basis of three months of experience to one month of public health nursing experience. This experience must include identification and assessment of physical and/or emotional problems, referral of any problems requiring further care, and the follow-up of the care provided and assessment to determine the health status and priority needs of a population.

Salary

$61,716 - $70,548
