Position Summary

Support from the public and private sectors are absolutely critical for Teach For All and its 34 network organizations to launch and scale thriving movements for educational equity within their nations. As the Director, Growth Strategy & Development Written Communications, you will directly contribute to building this support by producing compelling written communications that inspire a base of donors to invest in Teach For All and our network organizations around the world. Leveraging your exceptional writing ability, strategic thinking skills, and project management experience, you will be primarily responsible for a select set of development portfolios and collaborating with Teach For All’s development directors and program teams to prepare, write, and edit grant proposals, reports, and other high-stakes communications for external audiences. This is a unique opportunity for a gifted writer who will help to shape Teach For All’s voice, partner with senior staff to craft customized materials and development strategies to influence prominent prospective and current donors, and develop a wide range of knowledge on Teach For All’s programmatic and operational initiatives and impact.


The Director, Growth Strategy & Development Written Communications will develop high-quality written communications for external stakeholders in order to enable Teach For All’s Growth Strategy & Development team to raise nearly $70 million over the next three years, while also building a global constituency of champions for expanding educational equity. He/she will also help to advance Teach For All’s goal to grow to more than 40 partners by the end of 2015.


Responsibilities for the Director, Growth Strategy & Development Written Communications will include, but are not limited to:

75% - Producing high-quality written communications

· Building a deep understanding of external audiences’ motivations and the work and impact of Teach For All globally and in particular regions in order to serve as a strategic thought partner to Growth Strategy & Development senior staff in creating original written content in pursuit of funding

· Generating clear and compelling written communications for key external audiences, including the preparation of donor proposals, concept notes, reports, high-stakes emails, PowerPoint presentations, and other communications to inspire current and prospective donors to support Teach For All and its network organizations

20% - Project managing, liaising across and within teams, and maintaining systems for the efficient production of written materials

· Managing the writing production process to support the timely review and submission of external materials, including developing production timelines, defining division of labor, reviewing donor criteria, and coordinating the review and assembly of all required donor documentation

· Liaising across Teach For All’s Public Affairs and program staff to solicit and collect relevant information in support of donor communications, such as updates on the latest network developments, impact data, partner support priorities, staffing, and financial information

· Coordinating with Teach For All’s Executive Management team, the Public Affairs team, and other internal groups to streamline and create organization-wide communication materials that advance the Growth Strategy & Development team’s efforts with external stakeholders

· Contributing to the development and maintenance of a writing toolkit (e.g., a language bank) and systems that can be leveraged by the Growth Strategy & Development team to streamline and improve the organization’s external written communications

5% - Providing support on special projects

· Managing special projects as needed to meet the Growth Strategy & Development team’s communications needs, such as drafting key early stage communicatio



· Bachelor’s degree required

· Minimum 5 years full-time work experience

· Prior grant/business writing experience or experience producing high-level external communications required

· Prior development/fundraising experience, or knowledge of the grant application process, preferred

· Prior Teach For All network experience a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Exceptional written communication skills (in English)

· Exceptional reasoning and strategic problem-solving skills

· Ability to manage multiple strategic writing projects and deadlines in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, results-oriented work environment, while maintaining a very high bar for quality

· Ability to juggle several competing priorities at once with a spirit of flexibility and positive outlook

· Ability to work well independently and as a self-starter

· Draws satisfaction from supporting other individuals towards success and playing an integral behind-the-scenes role

· Interest in international development and global education preferred

· Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook preferred

Work Authorization

Candidates for this position must possess a US work authorization in order to be considered.

Travel and Hours

Less than 5% travel is expected (mostly to staff conferences). Given that this role will support individuals in various time-zones, some non-traditional hours are expected for occasional early or late calls.
