Vanport man begins third tour with Peace Corps
Beaver County Times, Beaver, Pennsylvania
Forty years ago, Jay Thomas was teaching elementary and junior high music in Ohio, when after only four years he came to a stark realization: He'd had enough.
And a teacher, he said, was "all I ever wanted to be."
He made a radical change, but really never abandoned his dream of imparting knowledge and altruistic service.
Thomas was in his mid-20s when he joined the Peace Corps in 1973. After serving two tours, one in Iran from 1973 to 1975 and one in Madagascar from 1997 to 2001, he departs Saturday, at age 66, for his third -- a two-year tour in Indonesia.
"It's a true, life-changing experience, a wonderful experience, a great time," said the Vanport Township man of his Peace Corps sojourns.
