To this day Kip and Maureen Doran dont know why the postcard wound up in their mailbox. Neither their friends nor their colleagues had received one. And the Dorans had never expressed a particular interest in the Peace Corps. But there it was, an invitation to a reception for potential Peace Corps volunteers over the age of 50.
Kip, who was 61 at the time and had spent 35 years working as a psychiatrist and professor, was immediately intrigued. I was just feeling that I wanted a change, he recalls. Its not that I disliked what I was doing. I loved what I was doing. But Im a person who likes novelty and variety, and I was ready to start a different phase of my life.
Maureen, a nurse practitioner and clinical professor with three years of experience in the mental-health field, voiced no objection. So the couple went to the reception and listened with growing interest as a number of returned Peace Corps volunteers talked about their experiences. The Dorans liked what they heard.
