From Bozeman to Palawan: Montana No. 4 in the nation for Peace Corps volunteers

The following excerpt comes from The Bozeman Daily Chronicle in Bozeman, Montana, and was originally published on December 22, 2011.

Bozeman High School graduate Ryan Goehrung lives in a small fishing village in the Philippines.

He's one of three Americans in town.

For kids especially, sometimes I'm the first white person they've ever seen, Goehrung said.

The 25-year-old Peace Corps volunteer has spent two years in the Filipino island province of Palawan, helping to protect coral reefs and establishing more sustainable fishing practices.

This year, Goehrung's Peace Corps service was set to end, but he didn't want to leave. He asked the Peace Corps to let him stay and got an extension for another year.

I love it there, he said Wednesday from his family's home in Bozeman, where he's spending Christmas.
