Benefits

The Peace Corps Master's International MPA is an innovative degree program that emphasizes teamwork, participation, learner empowerment, and asset-based transformation. Students will enjoy the benefit of a versatile, flexible MPA centered on the development of core competencies that prepare participants for a broad range of careers. The pre-service training provided on campus in Monterey integrates linguistic and cultural competencies with solid skills in public administration and nonprofit management. Opportunities to accelerate the degree program include additional trainings or in-service projects, allowing completion of the MPA in a total of 3 or 4 semesters on campus. Half-tuition scholarships are applied for the final semester of study following Peace Corps service. Students can earn up to 14 credit hours for service. Students also may apply for merit scholarships and financial aid for their studies at the Monterey Institute.

Description

The Graduate School of International Policy Studies (GSIPS) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies offers an MPA in International Management that prepares Peace Corps volunteers for international organizational strengthening and community development.

Students in the PCMI MPA program begin studies in the Fall or Spring semester. We provide in-depth core courses in public and nonprofit management, nonprofit financial management, program evaluation and research methods. Students complete a minimum of two semesters of study, including all core required courses, prior to leaving for Peace Corps assignment. PCMI MPA students may return to Monterey after Peace Corps service for one or two final semesters if they have not chosen to pursue additional credits through certificate programs or independent study while in service.

The PCMI MPA program offers the opportunity to focus on NGO capacity strengthening both in degree studies and in developing and transitioning societies in Peace Corps service. PCMI MPA students apply their assignment to a Capstone Experience, a research project which explores a variety of development issues related to their work in Peace Corps. Capstone project planning begins in the first semester of study, and is overseen by a faculty advisor. Students will then conduct research for their Capstone while on assignment, ensuring that the academic work is related to the successful completion of their Peace Corps mission.
