Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in secondary education provides initial teacher preparation at the master's degree level for qualified candidates holding a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a major in one of the participating content fields below or in a related area that includes coursework that is the equivalent of a major in such an area. The degree program prepares persons for certification to teach in grades 6-12 in the fields of Biology, Broad Field Science, Business Education, Chemistry, English, French, History, Mathematics, Political Science and Spanish; and for certification to teach in grades P-12 in Art and Health Education. The program is designed for college graduates whose undergraduate degrees did not include professional education preparation.

The Master of Education (MEd) degree program in Secondary Education extends and expands upon initial teacher education preparation in the secondary content fields of English, Mathematics, Natural Science, Social Science and Foreign Language (French & Spanish) education through a core of advanced professional education course work and advanced content area study.

Childhood & Middle Grades Education (MEd) extends and expands upon initial teacher education preparation in the childhood and middle grades content fields of English, Mathematics, Natural Science, and Social Sciences education through a core of advanced professional education course work and advanced content area study.

Special Ed: A cohort is an organizational structure of 18-20 students we use to provide instruction, support, and guidance for teacher and advanced candidates. Teacher candidates in a particular program (e.g., special education) enter together as a group. They take courses and complete field activities over a specified period. Each cohort is guided during that period by a professor skilled in advising, supervising, and and implementing best teaching practice.

Requirements

All education programs require the following:

1. Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a major (or the equivalent) in an available teaching area;
2. Have a minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA for all undergraduate coursework attempted;
3. Submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) that with the undergraduate GPA meet or exceed the formula requirements: Either your quantitative or analytical score added to your verbal score + 100 times the undergraduate GPA = 1100 or higher; or MAT score + ten times undergraduate GPA = 70 or higher;
4. Satisfy Praxis I requirements through either exempting the test or taking and passing it;
5. Submit a completed application for graduate study, all supporting documents (official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and test scores), and a $25 nonrefundable application fee to the Office of Enrollment Service;
6. Submit a completed application to the School of Education and complete the interview process;
7. Take the Praxis II exam (or GACE as of Fall 2006)
