Description

The MA/ESL program is specifically designed to develop leaders in the TESOL field, and attracts students from all over the world. The program strongly emphasizes theory and research, and many graduates go on to PhD studies in linguistics and applied linguistics, while others assume increasingly responsible positions in the US or their home countries. Most EL/L faculty have experience teaching English in other countries, and have achieved international recognition for their work.

The graduate program in RCTE provides an education in rhetoric and composition that will help students develop in themselves and others the literacies needed for citizenship in a world of diversity and change. Students in the program take courses in the history of rhetoric, composition theory, literary theory, research methodology, composition pedagogy, language, and literature, and may take courses in complementary fields outside English. In general, the program's courses examine discourse practices and theories in various cultural and educational contexts--historical and contemporary, oral and literate, literary and practical, elite and "popular."

Requirements

Apply online to the academic program, as well as to the Fellows program. Applicants must be admitted by The University of Arizona Graduate College and selected for admission to the Fellows program. Fellows carry out a 450 hour internship each year, and participate in community service projects and professional development opportunities. Renewal of funding depends on academic progress and meeting service obligations.
