LEAP Academy Internships of $25,000 comprised of a $10,000 stipend and $15,000 full tuition remission.

Description

Fellows are placed in full-time internships at the LEAP Academy, an inner city charter school affiliated with Rutgers University-Camden, where they will have opportunities for working with urban children and their families. Fellows will be enrolled in the Educational Policy and Leadership concentration and will go through the two-year MPA degree program as a cohort. The Educational Policy and Leadership Concentration comprises 42 credits that includes: completion of 7 core courses (21 credits), 4 specialized courses (12 credits), LEAP internship (6 credits) and a 3 credit Internship based on Peace Corp experience. The program was developed to target aspiring school teachers and/or educational administrators and to facilitate the certification process, so that graduates could be in a position to begin working as school teachers or administrators in New Jersey upon graduation. The MPA program is a two-year program. Fellows will be required to commit to the two-year fellowship at the LEAP Academy.

Internships will include: Teaching (Fellows taking this option will work in a classroom setting teaching a specific grade level and content area of math, science, or literacy); Academic Support and Remediation (Fellows taking this option will engage in academic programming for students who are need special attention); Health and Behavioral Wellness (Fellows taking this option, will work with the Rutgers/LEAP Health Center and the school's social work team in designing and implementing a series of character building programs.); Adult Education (Fellows taking this option, will work with the Parents Academy in designing and implementing adult education programming targeted at parents.); and, Early Childhood Development (Fellows taking this option will work in pre-school classrooms as well as with the development of a program for infants and toddlers.)

Requirements

Strong commitment to teaching in the demanding inner city environment of Camden, New Jersey and a baccalaureate degree from an accredited undergraduate school. Application materials include: a completed application, official transcripts showing all course work from undergraduate and graduate schools; results from the Graduate Record Examination/GRE or LSAT or GMAT; three letters of recommendation; a current resume and a letter stating the applicant's professional goals and experience.
