Benefits

Peace Corps Fellows automatically receive a 6 credit hour discount from the standard 48-hour program (over $ 5,000 benefit depending on residency) as well as a waiver of the program's experiential requirement. Fellows will participate in the SPEA Service Corps Program and will receive at and/or over a $ 5,000 stipend and 6 credit hours of tuition remission per academic year for their part-time (10 hours) service in the nonprofit or public sector.

Description

The Master of Public Affairs (MPA) degree at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) is an interdisciplinary, professional program that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead change and source solutions in addressing significant policy issues. SPEA?s MPA broadens students? understanding of economic, political, legal, and social issues encompassing public service while also developing expertise in one or more specialization areas which include: Comparative and International Affairs; Economic Development; Energy; Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management; Information Systems; Nonprofit Management; Policy Analysis; Public Financial Administration; Public Management; Local Government Management; Sustainability and Sustainable Development; and Specialized.

The Master of Science in Environmental Science (MSES) degree bridges the applied disciplines of chemistry, civil and chemical engineering, biology and geology. It focuses on the world's ecosystems and prepares students with the technical skills to solve complex environmental problems that are interdisciplinary in nature, including aspects of public policy and regulations, while developing expertise in one of the following specialization areas: Applied Ecology; Energy; Environmental Chemistry; Toxicology and Risk Assessment; Water Resources; and Specialized.

SPEA also offers a joint MPA/MSES which combines the aspects of the MPA and MSES culminating in a program with a 60 credit hour design and full integration of applied science and public policy.

Fellows participate in the SPEA Service Corps, which is a collaboration among a number of community members including the United Way of Monroe County, City of Bloomington, Monroe County Government, Monroe County Community School Corporation and the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.

Requirements

Eligibility is dependent upon acceptance to the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, qualification via FAFSA guidelines for Federal Work-Study and completion of Peace Corps Volunteer Service as detailed in the Peace Corps Description of Service.
