Up to six credits may be earned for Peace Corps field experience. Students may request tuition waiver for these credits.

Description

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County offers a Master's Degree in ESOL/Bilingual Education, with the possibility of K-12 teacher certification in ESOL.

The program consists of 36 hours of required courses and electives in second language acquisition, intercultural communication, bilingualism, the structure of English, research design, and a number of courses on methodology of teaching or testing English for speakers of other languages. As the oldest MA TESOL program in Maryland and one of the oldest in the United States, the program provides an integrated program of theory, practical experiences, and opportunities for personal reflection.

All courses address both ESL and EFL for elementary, secondary, adult, and university contexts. Students may choose to write a thesis or complete and present a final project. UMBC is located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and offers numerous opportunities for students to tutor or teach ESOL during their time in the program.

It is recommended that students complete a year of coursework before their Peace Corps assignment and then return to complete their degree; however, there is some flexibility.

Requirements

 

• Bachelor's degree with a 3.0 or better,
• Three letters of recommendation,
• GRE (and if applicable, TOEFL) scores,
• A written statement of purpose,
• Copies of official transcripts from all colleges attended, and
• The UMBC's standard graduate application.

No prior study of linguistics or teaching experience is required.
