Description

A distinguishing feature of BGSU’s Spanish graduate program is its long and unique tradition of integrating cross-cultural experiences with academic goals. The majority of Spanish graduate students choose to spend one year of the two-year program in our satellite campus in Spain or in an affiliated university in Latin America. Students who already have extensive international experience typically choose to spend both years on the BGSU campus. Students’ individual immersion experiences make them uniquely qualified to enrich the academic culture of the program.

 

Faculty members specialize in a wide range of thematic and geographical topics, providing regular course offerings in linguistics, language pedagogy, and the literatures/cultures of Spain and Latin America. Coursework also includes a variety of experiential learning opportunities. Several faculty members regularly advise students on employing hands-on methodologies such as field work in schools or interviews with local Spanish-speaking individuals.An internship course allows Spanish graduate students to learn from the local/regional Hispanic population at the same time that they offer valuable services to the community.

Requirements

Applicants typically have an undergraduate major in Spanish. Applicants can alternatively demonstrate a high level of Spanish proficiency from life experiences or international travel. The department looks for a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 both overall and in Spanish. We are particularly interested in accommodating highly motivated applicants with unique interests in the literatures, cultures and/or linguistics of the Spanish-speaking world.
