One credit hour will be awarded for each academic term served in Peace Corps, including Summer; students are not charged tuition or fees during their Peace Corps Service; $500 work study allowance for first year MI students; students can apply for Stafford loans and Federal Aid; FAFSA application is recommended before the January 31 early deadline. The Loret Miller Ruppe Endowed Scholarship for Peace Corps Masters' International students helps support students during their final semester on campus. The Lillian Baklarz Fund supports Peace Corps projects overseas.
The Michigan Technological University (MTU) School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science has designed an MI Program for students with an interest in forestry and Peace Corps service. Students can earn a Forestry (MS), Applied Ecology (MS), Forest Ecology and Management (MS), or Master of Forestry (MF) degree. The program is designed for students who have liberal arts degrees. Customized programs are designed for students with natural resources, forestry, and environmental studies backgrounds who have taken courses within the program. Students spend one academic term at the 4000+ acre Ford Forestry Center, learning fundamental forestry skills. The spring semester is spent at the main campus of MTU completing course work involving forestry, general ecology, and international forestry. Thesis, project, and course work degree options are available.
A demonstrated interest in the environment, international development, and community service; one prior semester or quarter of college-level chemistry; one prior introductory statistics course is recommended, but not required; GRE scores, recommended 1000 composite + 3.5 analytical writing; 3.0 GPA is suggested; resume; three letters of recommendation.
