After completing the academic year of coursework, Peace Corps volunteers go on to a two-year Peace Corps assignment in a position that takes advantage of their expertise and provides an opportunity to further explore the ideas learned in the program. MI Students then have the option of writing an independent professional project instead of compiling a portfolio.
Peace Corps service fulfills the professional practicum requirement; students receive a 50% scholarship during their Reflective Practice Phase while they serve as Peace Corps Volunteers; GRE not required; SIT grants, work-study, scholarships, and Federal loans are available; the first Financial Aid application priority date is March 1.
There is no tuition charge during Peace Corps service.
Description
SIT's academic curriculum incorporates field-based practice, reflection, and application, preparing graduates who are critical thinkers, effective communicators in at least two languages, and compassionate advocates with exceptional intercultural skills and awareness. Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, SIT educates leaders capable of bridging differences between people and nations in an effort to build a more peaceful and sustainable world. Many of SIT's staff and faculty are former Peace Corps Volunteers or former Peace Corps staff and trainers.
SIT's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is as unique as the interests of its students. Participants seeking the next level of professional qualification can explore ways of teaching and learning that are directly related to their own goals, and our teaching placements include universities, schools (K-12), and nonprofits. In just one year a MAT student at SIT can be trained and prepared to teach.
MAT Students earn a minimum of 33 credits during the one-academic-year program that includes a supervised, eight-week teaching internship in winter. During the internships, students not only explore different regions and cultures, but they learn about the place of English in the lives of the language learners and, consequently, their own roles as language teachers.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent; professional and intercultural experience; ability to analyze experience and utilize it as a source of learning.
