La Verne Law operates on what is known as a rolling admissions process. Applicants are evaluated and provided admission decisions on a continuous basis over several months, usually beginning in late fall and extending to midsummer.

Benefits

Prospective students applying through the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program will have the $50 application fee waived. As an added benefit to participating in the Coverdell Fellows Program, La Verne Law intends to provide a stipend for Fellows who qualify for the Program. The stipend can be used for fees, books, educational supplies, housing, travel, and medical insurance. Each Fellow is eligible to receive between $1,500 to $4,500 per year in stipends. Fellows would receive the stipend at the start of each academic year and must complete the Program requirements in order to renew the annual stipend benefit.

Description

The University of La Verne College of Law seeks graduates from the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program in order to attract public service-minded students who show an understanding of the local implications of global problems. La Verne Law is located in a section of Southern California known as the Inland Empire, one of the most rapidly growing areas in California. The Inland Empire is an extraordinarily diverse community. It is home to a large number of immigrants and others who face significant social barriers such as unemployment and homelessness.

La Verne Law Fellows would assist in providing legal services to people who cannot afford attorneys via externships with local public interest organizations or participation in one of the law school's two clinics. Underserved members of the community would gain access to competent legal representation, and we believe that Fellows would be able to offer empathy, compassion, and a respect for diversity in addition to providing sound legal advice.

Requirements

All Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program applicants are required to register with the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS). LSDAS keeps records of letters of recommendation, transcripts, and the LSAT score. Applicants must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. We ask that students interested in being considered for the Coverdell Fellows Program apply by April 30, 2011 for enrollment in Fall 2011 and by November 15, 2011 for Spring 2012. Students are notified of acceptance approximately four to six weeks after their application is complete. Additionally, students who are admitted and who accept La Verne Law's offer of admission will be required to submit official transcripts directly to La Verne Law prior to registration for classes.
