Description

Western Kentucky University (WKU) offers a Master of Science (MS) in Biology (non-thesis option) and a Certificate in Leadership Studies.

Completion of both academic programs requires 32 credit hours: the typical timeline for program completion is one year at WKU (comprising 18-24 credit hours of coursework), followed by 27 months of Peace Corps training and service, then a final semester at WKU. A minimum of one credit hour per academic term is required to maintain active enrollment in the university.

Requirements

In addition to Graduate Studies admission requirements, the Department of Biology requires:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in biology or equivalent including supporting courses in science and mathematics
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Three letters of reference, and
  • GRE general score (quantitative + verbal) of 1050 or equivalent and analytical writing score of 3.5. If the GRE has not been taken previously, exam scores from the MCAT (24) or DAT (16) may be substituted

In addition, prospective students must submit a statement of purpose, in which the applicant must specify the program to which they are applying, indicate their academic and career interests, and summarize relevant experiences.

Acceptance into the MI program is conditional based upon being nominated by Peace Corps for volunteer service. For MI candidates deemed ineligible for Peace Corps service or volunteer participants who do not complete their service, WKU will attempt to accommodate within its regular graduate degree programs.
