Description
This program awards a MA in TESOL with New York State teacher certification in TESOL (40 credits) or a MA in TESOL without teacher certification (36 credits). Students in the program take a year of classes in the MA TESOL program (at least 21 credits). Then, they serve in the Peace Corps for 27 months. TESOL Master’s International students qualify for Peace Corps assignments in secondary school TEFL instruction, university English teaching, and English teacher training. Master’s International Program MA TESOL students who successfully complete their Peace Corps service and meet academic requirements earn, at no cost, six credits of academic credit. After Peace Corps service, Master’s International program students complete their final semester of the MA TESOL program at Adelphi University, including a three credit student teaching placement.
Students can complete this program by attending classes on a full-time or part-time basis. Classes can be completed on weekday evenings at Adelphi’s Garden City campus on Long Island or on the weekends at the Adelphi Center in lower Manhattan.
To receive New York State teacher certification in TESOL students must complete 100 hours of fieldwork and pass the New York State teacher certification exams. Candidates are required to have 12 college credits of a language other than English or its equivalent prior to graduation. For certification, students must have a BA or BS degree in the liberal arts or meet state specified distribution requirements in the areas of the liberal arts. These requirements can be completed concurrently with the MA degree.
Requirements
Applications can be done on paper or online at the Adelphi University web site. The application requires an essay, transcripts for all previous college level work, and two references. No previous training in linguistics or teaching experience is required for admission. No test scores are required. A minimum of a 2.75 college GPA is required for acceptance; competitive applicants will have at least a 3.00 college GPA.
