Diversity in Peace Corps

Houston, who has Cerebral Palsy, describes her challenges in gaining acceptance among her fellow Peace Corps volunteers and later in the community in which she worked to improve the self-image of I-Kiribati people with disabilities to help them feel empowered “My being in Kiribati was a complete surprise to I-Kiribati people,” said Houston. “My participating and functioning in their world challenged some very deeply rooted ideas.
