Fellows will receive a $15,000/year stipend for two years. Peace Corps teaching will be applied toward classroom observation hours. Humboldt County is an extremely isolated and beautiful coastal community 280 miles north of San Francisco. Humboldt has a progressive faculty and boasts a large RPCV community.
Besides earning a secondary or elementary teaching credential, Fellows may take up to nine units from the MA in Education Graduate Program. These units may be applied toward an MA in Education if the Fellow is accepted into the graduate program. Note, an additional year of coursework beyond the two-year fellowship would be necessary to complete the MA coursework. A thesis is also required.
Description
Program Temporarily Suspended
Fellows teach for two years at a variety of schools in small rural communities on California’s north coast, while attending the Secondary or Elementary Programs part time. The Fellows Program at Humboldt State is currently adding partner schools at both the elementary and secondary levels. Our partner schools offer excellent teaching apprenticeships. Fellows typically work under the direction of one mentor teacher in the secondary program and one or two mentors in the elementary program. Fellows are given time to learn the culture and expectations of their schools before taking full responsibility for particular classes or programs at the school. The timeline for the transition into teaching will vary depending on each Fellow’s experience and the specific requirements at the school site. Besides teaching, their commitments include staff meetings, planning, and extracurricular duties. Fellows are not hired directly by the district. The Fellowship stipend is paid to them by the participating school district through a contracted services agreement between the Fellow and the district.
Current schools working with the Humboldt State Fellows Program include Six Rivers Charter School, Academy of the Redwoods Early College High School and Garfield Elementary School. These are small schools that provide personal attention to their students, families and teachers. Six Rivers is a 9th-12th grade charter located on the campus of a larger high school. There are approximately six teachers and 120 students on site. Academy of the Redwoods enrolls approximately 200 students in a 9th-12th grade high school program on a community college campus. Academy students earn an AA degree along with a high school diploma. Garfield Elementary offers multiple-graded classes in a k-6th grade school.
