Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to Peace Corps Fellows for the first year BSN or MSN program; During the second year of the MSN program, Fellows will be employed full time as a registered nurse in a nurse residency program which is part of the MSN program, and will receive full time salary support.

Description

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for entry into professional nursing practice. This foundation offers both academic and professional nursing courses that provide the base for clinical competence and informed judgments about health care situations and care of patients in both in and out-patient settings.

The Second degree option in the BSN program is available for those who have completed a previous non-nursing undergraduate degree and meet the UAB criteria for undergraduate admission. Applicants must have at least a baccalaureate degree in a non-nursing major that was earned at an accredited school or university and the first degree must have been based upon at least 120 semester hours of earned credit. Students in this option must first apply to UAB as an undergraduate transfer student where they are assigned a pre-nursing advisor who will assist them in determining eligibility for application and admission to the upper division major.

The Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP). is an alternate pathway into the existing master's in nursing (MSN degree) for applicants who have a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing, who are not registered nurses, and who seek MSN preparation as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). The AMNP was developed in response to the growing need for well-educated, highly-skilled professionals who can manage complexity within clinical environments.

The UAB AMNP is distinct among schools of nursing because it:

• Prepares professional nurses for generalist, entry-level practice through initial licensure by examination in Alabama as a Registered Nurse;
• Establishes a foundation for competent professional practice as a registered nurse through a mentored nurse residency in entry-level clinical practice; and
• Equips graduates for study in the advanced generalist area of nursing practice

Requirements

BSN Admission Requirements for Second Degree Students

Admission to the Second Degree BSN option is available in the fall and spring terms. Requirements for admission to the program include:

• Have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in a major other than nursing at a regionally accredited institution.
• The first degree must be based on at least 120 semester hours of accredited work.
• A minimum grade of “C” in the pre-nursing courses and a pre-nursing course GPA of at least 2.75 is required for admission.

What are the admission requirements for the (AMNP) MSN option?

• Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university;
• A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale overall or last 60 hours;
• Completion of AMNP Foundation Courses;
• Minimum required score on one of the following standardized admission tests: MAT 410; GMAT 480; or GRE combined score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections (These tests may be waived if certain requirements are met);
• Three references reflecting academic achievement and work experience;
• Submission of application by published deadline with fee.
